How to Care for Your 3D Printed Products: Maintenance and Cleaning Tips

how to care for your 3d printed products

Why proper care helps your 3D pieces last longer — and look better doing it.

Over the last few years, 3D printed products have made their way from industrial prototyping labs into stylish, modern homes. With the rise of independent makers and small-batch production, shoppers are embracing the uniqueness and charm of items crafted with 3D printing technology — from book-inspired bookmarks to quirky toilet roll holders and personalised keyrings.

But unlike mass-produced plastic, 3D printed pieces are made with thought, detail, and a completely different kind of material. Most small businesses, including ours, use PLA — a plant-based, eco-friendly plastic that’s strong, biodegradable, and perfect for indoor use. Still, it comes with its own care considerations.

So if you’ve recently picked up a 3D printed piece or are simply curious about how to look after one, here’s what you need to know.

Keep it Cool: Why Heat Matters

PLA (short for polylactic acid) is derived from natural sources like corn starch or sugarcane, making it kinder to the planet, but it’s also more sensitive to heat than traditional plastics. While your print won’t melt in your hand, exposure to high temperatures over time can lead to warping, bending, or fading.

The rule of thumb? Keep your 3D prints indoors and out of direct sunlight. Windowsills, radiators, conservatories, or even a hot car boot aren’t ideal places to store or display them. Choose cool, shaded spots in your home instead — your shelf decor will thank you.

Dust, Don’t Scrub

One of the beauties of 3D printing is the texture. Layered finishes, intricate curves, fine lines — it’s what gives each piece that handcrafted charm. But those details can also attract dust.

Avoid reaching for a wet cloth or household spray straight away. Instead:

  • Use a soft brush (a clean paintbrush or makeup brush works wonders) to lift dust from detailed areas.
  • A dry microfibre cloth is perfect for flat surfaces.
  • For hard-to-reach spots, a quick blast of compressed air can do the trick.

The goal is gentle cleaning. Harsh cloths, rough scrubbing pads, or abrasive cleaners can damage the surface and dull the detail.

A Damp Cloth is Fine — But Skip the Soak

Need something more than a dust? A quick wipe with a damp cloth is safe for most prints, but avoid fully submerging your product in water, especially if it’s made of multiple pieces or includes small moving parts.

Stick to lukewarm water — nothing hot — and if needed, add a tiny drop of mild washing-up liquid. Harsh cleaning products or alcohol-based sprays are a no-go. Once cleaned, pat dry gently or allow the print to air dry naturally.

Be Mindful of Handling

PLA is durable, but it’s not indestructible. Like ceramics or wooden crafts, 3D printed pieces should be handled with care. Thin or delicate sections (like legs, hooks, or pegs) can snap if dropped or used too forcefully.

If you’ve purchased a functional item, such as a toilet roll holder or hook, make sure to use it within its intended purpose. We design each piece with strength in mind, but they’re not built to bear excessive weight or act as impromptu climbing holds for toddlers (yes, it’s happened).

Off-Season? Store it Right

If you’re swapping out your décor or rotating seasonal items, storing 3D prints properly will help them last even longer. Wrap them in tissue paper or place them in a sturdy box, and keep them in a cool, dry area — away from damp lofts, hot garages, or freezing sheds.

Avoid piling heavy objects on top of stored prints, and make sure they’re kept flat to avoid bending or pressure on any fragile areas.

Fixes and Repairs

Accidents happen. If a piece does break or crack, many small fixes can be made with a touch of superglue, especially for clean breaks. For more complex repairs, reach out to your maker. At Ryan Does 3D, we’re always happy to offer tips or help assess whether a repair or a reprint is best.

In Short…

3D printed products are a unique blend of craftsmanship, innovation, and eco-conscious design. With just a bit of regular care — gentle dusting, cool storage, and careful handling — they can continue to brighten up your space for years to come.
